Denise Allen's descriptions and guiding. She was very knowledgeable and informative and her very practical and down to earth approach made the sites come alive.
Dr Denise Allen
Biography
Denise Allen PhD has a background in archaeology, and is a specialist in Roman glass with a wide interest in Classical civilisations.
Denise began her archaeological career as a full-time digger, working for three years on sites all over the UK. She then studied archaeology at Cardiff University and, after a year spent plotting air photographs in the Buckinghamshire County Museum, went back to Cardiff to do a PhD on Roman Glass. She has continued to work as a freelance glass specialist ever since, juggling this with bringing up a family, working on the cataloguing of artefacts for the Hampshire County Museum Service, lecturing for the WEA and various University extra-mural departments and leading archaeological tours. Her first involvement with Andante came in the early days, when she led the first tours to Tunisia and Sicily, and she joined the office staff in 1999, became Deputy Director shortly afterwards, and is now responsible for the tour programme. She continues to lead tours whenever she can!
Publications
Publications comprise more than 100 glass reports (list available on request!) and (rather more accessible) Roman Glass in Britain Shire Archaeology 1998.
