Itinerary 2019

Day 1

Arrive in Athens and transfer to the hotel. Take the time to unwind before having dinner this evening as a group.

Day 2

Our first full day of visits will be spend in Athens. We start the day with a walking tour of the Agora during the morning, the best-known example of an ancient Greek agora, located beneath the northwest slope of the Acropolis. During the afternoon we wander the halls of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, the largest archaeological museum in Greece housing the most important collection of ancient Greek Art in the world.

Day 3

This morning we journey to Brauron, where we will see the Sanctuary of Artemis. This sanctuary was related to the Brauronion, an urban counterpart on the Acropolis in Athens. After lunch in Lavrion, we visit small local museum where finds from this area are on display. On to Ancient Thorikos, another Greek city in Attica and the former mining centre of the Laureotica, to tour the site. Later, we travel to Cape Sounion and have the chance to marvel at the Temple of Poseidon before sunset. We will have dinner here this evening.

Day 4

Another day to explore sites in Athens. In the morning we will explore the famous Acropolis and South Slope with impressive structures, and unique masterpieces of ancient architecture. The most important structures visible today derive from the Golden Age of Pericles, 5th century BC. After lunch, we will pay a visit to the Acropolis Museum viewing finds from the area.

Day 5

We journey via Mount Parnassus to Delphi, a breathtaking site famous for its pan-Hellenic Sanctuary of Apollo and its oracle, the Pythia. Dating back to Mycenaean times, this ancient city was thought to be the centre of the world and the dwelling place of Apollo. We have a full day to explore this vast site with all its monuments in its impressive setting.

Day 6

Today’s excursion takes us to Ancient Thebes in the morning. To set the background for our exploration of the site, we spend the morning in the local museum which houses artefacts from different archaeological sites in Boeotia. Then we visit Ancient Thebes itself, the mythical home of Oedipus. After lunch, we head on to Eleusis, famous for the Eleusian Mysteries, centred around Demeter and Persephone.

Day 7

We travel to Isthmia. The ancient city was located in a strategic position on the main road from Athens to Corinth and was one of the centres for the Panhellenic games. Here we visit the Archaic Temple of Poseidon, and the site museum. Then our journey takes us to Corinth, once one of the largest and wealthiest city-states in Greece. Here, we will explore the Doric Temple of Apollo and other remains mostly dating to the Roman period.

Day 8

Today our first visit will be to the Archaeological Museum of Nafplion, housed in one of the best-preserved Venetian buildings in Greece. The exhibitions cover a large period of time, from the Palaeolithic to the Roman Period. After lunch, we head to the sanctuary of the healing god Aesclepios at Epidaurus where we also visit its acoustically theatre, praised by Pausanias for its symmetry and beauty.

Day 9

The last full day of our tour will take us in the morning to Mycenae, where Heinrich Schliemann uncovered the famous shaft graves comprising impressive grave goods such as the so-called “Mask of Agamemnon”. We wander the ancient citadel, once a centre of the great Late Bronze Age civilisation of mainland Greece. We will walk through the famous Lion Gate into the fortified citadel with Cyclopean walls to view the well-known Grave Circles, tombs, and the remains of the palace. We will visit the onsite museum with its unique collection of Mycenaean religious sculpture. After lunch, there will be a visit to the Treasury of Atreus. The largest round building without interior support until the time of the emperor Hadrian.

Day 10

After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our individual flights home or onward travel.
