We take an overnight flight to Johannesburg from London.
After landing this morning, we drive to Maropeng to visit The Cradle of Humankind Visitor Centre to get an introduction to human origins. Afterwards, we make our way to our first hotel in Maropeng.
Today, we start with an exploration of the Sterkfontein Caves. It was here that the famous and important two million-year old fossilised skull of one of our early hominid ancestors was discovered. We visit Swartkrans this afternoon, a farm near Sterkfontein, notable for being extremely rich in archaeological material, particularly hominid remains.
Our exploration of the evolution of mankind continues with a visit to the Origins Centre in Braamfontein. Offering a stark contrast to the morning, we visit the Apartheid Museum, to acknowledge much more recent historical events.
Today we have a 4x4 adventure at Makapansgat, an important Palaeolithic site that is littered with caves. We discover the Makapansgat limeworks, the oldest cave within the whole complex. Many fossil bones have been recovered here, amongst them the remains of our ancestors that roamed these parts between 2 and 3 million years ago. On to the Cave of the Hearths, where excavations have unearthed a remarkable snapshot of how our early ancestors lived.
We drive to Malelane. Upon arrival, we will enjoy a Bongani Rock Art tour and have some time to rest in the later afternoon.
Another adventure today at Berg-en-Dal where we trek across bush land on the hunt for rock art scattered on boulders across the landscape. In the afternoon, there will be an open vehicle game drive in the Kruger National Park. This area has an incredibly diverse ecosystem. Spot elephants, antelops and hippos in their natural environment. The park in home to an impressive array of wildlife; lions, cheetahs, rhinos, and buffalo wander a 20,000 km square expanse of park land.
After an early game drive, we travel by road to Johannesburg and check into our hotel, ready for tomorrow’s flight.
We transfer to Tanzania and arrive in the afternoon. We transfer to our hotel located in Dar es Salaam and have time to relax.
This morning will be spent in the National Museum Dar Es Salaam housing vast collections of Tanzania’s past. The afternoon is free to explore the city.
We will drive to Bagamoyo to stroll through the town, one of the most important trading ports along the East African coast. After lunch we will drive to the Kaole Ruins, remains of an ancient Muslim Shirazi settlement of the 13th to 16th century.
Today we fly to Karatu, on the edge of the Ngorongoro highlands.
We will drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area today to see the Ngorongoro Crater. Here, we will experience the area during game drives.
Today we will be at the famous Olduvai Gorge where we will drive around and visit the local museum. Known as the cradle of mankind, this is where Mary Leakey and her team found the remains of Homo habilis, probably the first early human species. In the afternoon, we make our way back to Karatu.
We will spend our last morning in Shanga, before we depart tothe airport for our flight back to London
