Buxton Festival

Built in 1903, the Buxton Opera House hosted many events until 1976 when it fell into disrepair and was eventually closed down. Only three years later, after extensive restoration work, it was reopened and has since become the worthy home of the Buxton Opera Festival.

This particular opera festival is one of the most important in Britain, holding performances of both well-known and rarely performed works.

Two operas are included in this short break. Led by a personable expert in opera, you will be treated to informative talks on the performances as well as be able to enjoy lively discussions about the productions. There will also be opportunities to get an exclusive insight into what goes on behind the scenes, as well as the privileged chance to meet one or two of the performers themselves.

*Buxton 2019 includes the world premiere of Georgiana, an opera pasticcio with lyrics written to reflect the daring life and times of the Fifth Duchess of Devonshire set to music from the great Georgian composers who provided the soundtrack to her sometimes scandalous behaviour: Handel, Mozart and Storace, not to mention the lady herself, who also composed. The programme, which includes concerts and a book series featuring the country’s leading thinkers through a partnership with the British Academy, includes The Oprhans of Koombu, a South African children’s opera which pre-dates but reflects that country’s ground-breaking Truth and Reconciliation hearings.

  • Tickets to two performances, Georgiana (World Premiere) and Eugene Onegin
  • Go behind-the-scenes with a member of staff
  • Accommodation at the Old Hall, located in the centre of Buxton
  • Meet a member of the cast after the performance
