The festival takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Holland Park, at what is now just a shell of a former palace built in 1605. Known initially as Cope Castle, the Jacobean mansion was later renamed as Holland House. It was mostly destroyed by a bomb in 1940 and was never rebuilt. In 1986, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea took control of what remained of the house and its surrounding grounds. With a canopy put over the area by the ruins of the house, a space was created for summer performances for visiting theatre, opera and dance companies.

Opera Holland Park was founded in 1996 by Michael Volpe, opening with a production of Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera. It has been running since then every summer, offering a selection of operas from the well-known repertoire to more obscure works. In 2019, the season will include the staging of Un Ballo in Maschera again.

  • Tickets to two performances, Un Ballo in Maschera and Manon Lescaut
  • Go behind-the-scenes
  • Meet a member of the performing cast
  • Enjoy a delicious picnic dinner at the opera house
  • Stay at a hotel in Kensington
