Join us on a fascinating journey through over 30,000 years of Welsh history. From early prehistoric sites and Roman occupation to the Middle Ages, we explore the longevity and wealth of the archaeology of Wales. This is a unique tour for Andante – every day we follow a different theme, with a guide whose specialism, local knowledge and enthusiasm will transform each site we visit.

Itinerary 2020

Day 1

We meet at our hotel. This afternoon, we spend time in St Fagans National Museum of History for an introduction to the archaeology of the Principality.

Day 2

We journey to Caerleon to visit the Legionary fortress of the Second Legion, the best preserved in all of Britain. Visible remains on display here include the baths, amphitheatre and barracks. Not far away from here is one of the most complete Roman town walls in Britain, which once protected the town of Venta Silurum – Caerwent.

Day 3

Today we explore the Gower Peninsula, rich in prehistory. We will walk to the Severn-Cotswold chambered tomb at Parc le Breos, and nearby Cat Hole Cave. A stroll on Rhossili Down takes you past cairns and chambered tombs, including Sweyne’s Howe. We end the day at Arthur’s Stone burial chamber.

Day 4

A day of castles in the south-west awaits. The subjugation of the old Welsh kingdoms by new Norman rulers in the 11th and 12th centuries were consolidated by the construction of a line of castles from Chepstow to Pembroke. We visit Llansteffan, Laugharne and Carew.

Day 5

Today we visit the gold mines at Dolaucothi, which provide evidence for Roman and later mining. We journey to the Roman fort of Tomen y Mur. The last visit of the day will be to Penmachno to see a remarkable collection of post-Roman inscriptions, housed in St Tudclud’s Church.

Day 6

A day on Anglesey, the ancient and sacred Island of Mon. We start with a visit to the chambered tombs of Bryn Celli Ddu and Barclodiad y Gawres. Afterwards we explore the Ty Mawr hut circles. On to Caergybi to view the Roman fort at Holyhead and finally to Penmon Priory.

Day 7

We visit the Roman fort at Segontium, situated to watch over the Menai Straits, and Caernafon Castle, one of the huge fortifications built by Edward I. After an independent lunch, we have free time to explore Caernarfon.

Day 8

Into the Clwydian hills to see the impressive Iron Age hillforts, including Foel Fenlli and Moel y Gaer Rhosesmor.

Day 9

A day on foot in Chester, fortress base of the Twentieth Legion, and a prosperous Roman, medieval and later city. We visit the amphitheatre, city walls and the Grosvenor Museum with a very fine collection of Roman tombstones and other artefacts.

Day 10

We travel through the Welsh Marches, stopping at Wroxeter to visit the remains of this important Roman town (and the reconstructed Roman house). Our tour ends upon arrival back in Cardiff.
