In the vast, flat area known as the Plain of Lombardy lies Milan, Italy’s business capital – famous for manufacturing industries, fashion and food. The Celts founded the city over 2,500 years ago and, with the Roman conquest, its name was Latinised to Mediolanum, meaning “at the centre of the plain”. Not far away is Brescia, also dating back to the Iron Age, with some traces of earlier settlement. It is home to some of the best preserved Roman remains in northern Italy.

  • See the extraordinary frescoes of Roman Brescia
  • Discover where the stone carving of the “woolly sow”, ancient symbol of Milan, is currently lodged
  • Admire the archaeology that lies beneath Milan’s magnificent cathedral and take a tour up to its roof with its famous spires
  • Explore the UNESCO sites of Santa Giulia in Brescia and Castelseprio
