Itinerary 2019

Day 1

We meet this afternoon at our hotel for an introductory lecture before dinner.

Hotel: Hotel in Hexham
Meals: Dinner included

Day 2

Today we look at the little-visited western flank of the Hadrian’s Wall frontier on the Cumberland Coast. In the morning, we travel to Maryport, pausing at Swarthy Hill (milefortlet 21) one of the string of milefortlets that extended 25 miles along the coast from the western end of the Wall to Maryport. Here, we visit the Roman Fort and enjoy views across the Solway into Scotland. The Senhouse Roman Museum is the result of generations of collecting of both sculpture and inscriptions by the Senhouse family, and it contains the largest collection of Roman military altars in Britain – and the third largest in the Roman Empire. Your guide lecturer directed excavations here from 2011-15.

In the afternoon we drive to Ravenglass, the southernmost fort on the frontier system, to see the Wall's Roman bath house – one of the highest-standing surviving Roman structures in Britain.

Hotel: Hotel in Hexham
Meals: All Meals included

Day 3

This morning we drive along Hadrian’s Wall, pausing at Turret 52a, Banks East and the pre Wall Pike Hill turret. We begin at Milecastle 48, Poltross Burn, and walk 1 mile to Birdoswald fort, via Turrets 48a and 48b, the bridge over the river Irthing at Willowford and Milecastle 49, Harrows Scar. This is the only stretch of the entire Wall where the visitor can see the full set of features in a Wall mile – both milecastles and the two intervening turrets. We then visit Birdoswald Roman Fort, one of the most complex sites on the Wall (your guide lecturer has directed 10 seasons of excavation here since 1987). The newly remodelled visitor centre and museum was opened in 2018. We have lunch in the new National Park centre at The Sill, with its rooftop terrace affording superb views of the Wall. In the afternoon, we return to Carlisle and visit Tullie House Museum – one of the two major Hadrian’s Wall museums, and its new Hadrian’s Wall gallery.

Hotel: Hotel in Hexham
Meals: Breakfast & dinner included

Day 4

Today we visit the iconic central sector of the Wall. Beginning at Steel Rigg, we walk the classic 3 miles across the grandiose crags of the Great Whin Sill, passing Milecastles 39, Castle Nick, 38, Hotbank, and 37, Housesteads, finishing with a visit to the Housesteads Roman Fort and Museum. In the afternoon, we visit the temple of Mithras at the fort of Carrawburgh, ending the day at the fort of Chesters, with its beautifully preserved bath house, and splendid Victorian museum.

Hotel: Hotel in Hexham
Meals: Breakfast & dinner included

Day 5

The Stanegate was the Trajanic frontier pre-dating Hadrian’s Wall, and today we visit its key sites. We spend an entire morning at Vindolanda, famous for its unique collection of Roman ink writing tablets. We visit the extensive and ongoing excavations, and the superb museum. In the afternoon, we travel to the extensive Roman site of Corbridge, with its superb museum, which was completely redesigned in 2018.

Meals: Breakfast & dinner included

Day 6

On our final day, we begin in the museum of the eastern flank of the Wall, the Great North Museum in Newcastle. After this, we drive to WallsendSegedunum to visit the most completely excavated Roman fort on the line as well as the museum and reconstructed bath house.
