Venice at New Year
At the head of the Adriatic, floating on the ephemeral islets of the lagoon, is the city of Venice. We explore both the great churches, palaces and museums, and the lesser-known archaeological remains, still being uncovered. We visit the islands of Torcello and Murano, where underwater investigation has revealed much about the trade that underpinned Venice’s rise to greatness.
This is a very privileged view of the city. We have special access to the iconic Doge’s palace, where we visit the cells and historic offices of state. We explore the once-mighty republic on-foot and by boat. This morning we catch a flight to the beautiful city of Venice and in the afternoon we pay a visit to Altinum, an ancient Roman coastal town. After we have discovered this historic area, we return in a water taxi and head to our hotel, where we can relax for the remainder of our evening.
Today, we begin our visits at Torcello - a tiny island that is home to impressive sights that include Venetian-Byzantine mosaics and a beautifully decorated cathedral. During our time here, we explore the breathtaking interior of this cathedral, named the Santa Maria Assunta. We also pay a visit to the Santa Fosca, which is small but visually striking, and there will be time to take in the collections at the Archaeological Museum. In the afternoon, we make our way to the nearby Venetian island of Murano, famed for its glass, to tour the legendary factory and museum.
Today we take a vaporetto to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, where we can enjoy incredible views over this beautiful area from its church. Next, we admire the Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, which is notable for housing impressive Renaissance artworks. We continue on to the Scuola Grande Di San Rocco. After lunch at a traditional osteria, we walk, via the Rialto Bridge, to San Giovanni e Paolo - a stunning Italian Gothic church that houses interesting funerary monuments and paintings. Our final visit of the day is to the Santa Maria Miracoli, an incredible church with a glorious marble interior.
Our day begins with a visit to the magnificent Doge’s Palace. A marvel of Venetian Gothic architecture, our special tour here offers unique insight into the political and civil history of the Venice Republic. After lunch, we move on to visit both the Archaeological Museum and Correr Museum, and the latter is home to enchanting exhibits on Venetian history, culture and art. In the evening we will enjoy a very special private tour of the legendary Saint Mark’s Basilica.
Today is New Year’s Eve and we begin the celebrations with a glorious walk that takes in San Giorgi dei Greci, a church with a classically Venetian exterior and striking golden iconostasis inside. Next, we visit the Scuola Grande di San Giorgio, where we can see panels painted by Vittore Carpaccio between 1502 and 1507, and then we continue on to the Venetian Arsenal to see the gate. After lunch, we visit San Pietro in Castello the city’s first cathedral. Following a luxurious gala dinner we will ring in the New Year watching a glittering fireworks display from San Giorgio before returning to our hotel.
The brand New Year is welcomed in with a morning walk that takes in the iconic Ponte dell’Accademia and leads us to a visit at the San Pantalon church, which is famous for its magnificent Baroque ceiling painted by Fumiani. Next, we take the vaporetto to San Marcuola church, to visit the area known as the Ghetto, and then we stop for lunch at an authentic Osteria. Later, following a taxi ride along the Grand Canal, there will be a little free time and a visit to a 15th-century former monastic church in central Venice called San Zaccaria.
This morning we take a private water taxi to the airport, where we catch our return flight home and bid farewell to our wonderful group.
