The Etruscans reached as far north as the region known today as Emilia Romagna. They ruled Bologna from the 7th century BC and were regarded by the Romans as obsessed with drinking and feasting. Itinerary 2019

Day 1

Arrive in Bologna in time for lunch at our hotel. We then take a short walk to the Archaeological Museum, before returning to our hotel prior to dinner.

Day 2

Our first visit is to Monte Bibele, where an extensive collection of artefacts from the Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages have been unearthed since the end of World War II. We continue to the adjacent Luigi Fantini Archaeological Museum at Monterenzio, to housing a wide array of local finds. We proceed to Podere San Giuliano, where we participate in a cookery course.

Day 3

A short walk through the old market streets with an opportunity to learn about some of the local produce. We then continue to the church complex at Santo Stefano. After lunch in a traditional salumeria, we visit the Basilica of San Petronio and the archaeological excavations nearby.

Day 4

An early start sees us at a tasting of the region’s most famous cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano, produced at an artisan factory. Afterwards we visit the family-run production of traditional balsamic vinegar and here we will sample the vinegar at its various  stages of ageing. We return to Bologna and have the afternoon at leisure.

Day 5

Today starts with a walk in the hills with a local expert who will describe a typical truffle hunt. With any luck we will find an elusive truffle or two and eat them for lunch. We head to the Etruscan town of Marzabotto where we will visit the site museum, mural cemetery, capitol and urban area with shops and temples.

Day 6

Drive to Ferrara where we visit the Este Castle, a moated medieval structure in the center of the city, and the cathedral as well as the Archaeological Museum where we explore the Gold Room, the Pirogues Room, and more.

Day 7

We leave Bologna and travel to Modena. Here we visit the Archaeological Museum and the Duomo. After lunch, we make our way to the Carpigiani Gelato University and learn about the history of ice cream. We enjoy a freshly made gelato before our transfer to the airport for our individual flights home or onward travel.
