Itinerary 2019

Day 1

Arrive in Vienna and enjoy some time to unwind before dinner this evening.
Hotel: Overnight in Vienna
Meals: Lunch & dinner included

Day 2

Following a hearty breakfast our day begins at the Naturhistorisches Museum, which houses a remarkable prehistoric collection of artefacts in an elaborate 19th century setting. Highlights include the enigmatic Venus of Willendorf, a small limestone nude that has been dated to between 24,000 and 22,000 BC. A remarkable figure from Austria’s past.

This afternoon we will take a stroll through one of the Christmas markets, laced with lights, for an abundance of Glühwein and Apfelstrudel, to get in the right mood for Christmas.
Hotel: Overnight in Vienna
Meals: All meals included

Day 3

We start the day with a drive out to Stift Melk, a Benedictine abbey perched on a rugged outcrop, overlooking the River Danube. This lavish 500-roomed complex was founded on the site of a Roman castle in 1089, and became a major production centre for Medieval religious and musical manuscripts. Our guided tour takes in the abbey’s famous library, as well as some of the masterful trompe l’oeil ceilings, and the imperial rooms where Napoleon himself once stayed.

Following lunch, we make our way to the former imperial summer palace of Schönbrunn, a sweeping Baroque building containing some 1,400 gilt-edged rooms, as well as a superb sculpted garden, complete with Romanesque follies, a maze, and the towering archways of the “Gloriette”. A masterclass in Viennese opulence.
Hotel: Overnight in Vienna
Meals: All meals included

Day 4

For a relaxing morning on Christmas Day, we visit another of Vienna’s celebrated Christmas markets. The bustling scenes of the city are sure to make us all feel merry and bright. We continue to St. Stephen's Cathedral with its mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and the underground catacombs. This building commands attention from the surrounding cobbled courtyard, its unique geometric patterned roof is one of a kind; intricately laid tiles create a brightly coloured chevron pattern across the building.

The rest of the day is ours to soak up Vienna’s enchanting yuletide moods at our leisure. This evening we enjoy an indulgent Christmas dinner with the group. Frohe Weihnachten!
Hotel: Overnight in Vienna
Meals: All meals included

Day 5

A day exploring Imperial Vienna. We visit the Imperial Crypt beneath the Capuchin church, another resting place of members of the Habsburg dynasty. Inside, it is decorated with a stunning Baroque alter and façade. Here, we admire the collection of secular and ecclesiastical treasures in the Imperial Treasury.

This afternoon we will see the former winter palace Hofburg, former seat of the Habsburg dynasty and now housing the office of the President of Austria. The grandeur of this building is truly captivating, and is suitably apt to be the historical and modern epicentre to Viennese power. This beautiful building complex houses various museums and stunning imperial apartments.
Hotel: Overnight in Vienna
Meals: All meals included

Day 6

We spend our final morning in Vienna at the Schloss Belvedere, a historic building complex home to a world renowned art collection. After, we  transfer to the airport for our individual flights home or onward travel.
