Summary

A voyage through five thousand years of Welsh religious beliefs.

This stunning trip takes us through 5,000 years of religious thought in what is now Wales. We will engage with murky pre-Christian beliefs in Neolithic burial chambers and a lofty stone circle, and explore the druidic centre of Anglesey, the attack upon which in 61 AD is so vividly described by Tacitus. During our tour we will encounter Roman religions and beliefs and engaging with the ground-shaking conversion to Christianity and be exploring the evolution of ‘Celtic’ Christianity through to the Catholicism of the independent kings and princes of Wales. We will touch the Early Medieval stones they commissioned with their names upon them and gaze upon the beauty of early carved ‘Celtic’ crosses. Our visits include medieval pilgrimage sites, cathedrals and abbeys and exploring the development of Anglicanism and the beginnings of the powerful and influential Welsh non-conformity. This will take us through museums, cromlech, Roman towns, Gothic wells, secluded Cistercian abbeys, imposing cathedrals and a castle. We finish with a day at St. Fagans (the Welsh Folk Museum) the largest open-air folk museum in Europe, where we can visit chapels and churches which have been relocated, revisiting the thousands of years we have explored.

Tour highlights:

  • Roman Chester and museums to striking medieval Norman castles (Caernarfon, Harlech, Conwy, Beaumaris)
  • St. Asaph and St. Davids Cathedral - seat of medieval Welsh learning. Early Inscribed crosses and stones
  • Wander St. Fagans – the largest open-air museum in Europe with dozens of relocated buildings
