The Archaeology of the Isle of Man

Douglas was built at the mouth of the river Glas at the southern end of the bay and its name probably derives from the Celtic ‘Duboglassio’ meaning ‘black river’. This sheltered spot provided an ideal harbour and the discovery of the large Ballaquayle Viking treasure hoard on the outskirts of the town suggest the early importance of this site. By the early 18th century, Douglas was thriving, largely due to its burgeoning smuggling trade, and links with Liverpool during the Industrial revolution further added to the town’s prosperity. The introduction of steam ships between the two cities brought tourism to the island and families came in their thousands from the Lancashire cotton towns to enjoy the island’s sandy beaches. Today the island is much quieter but the trappings of seaside town remain - the long promenade which stretches nearly the whole length of the bay, the boarding houses, landscaped walks and entertainment complexes and, of course, the glorious sea views. We are based at the Regency Hotel, a large Victorian era building, overlooking the seafront at the northern end of Douglas Promenade, about 2 miles from the main shopping centre. It has its own bus stop and there is a service bus to and from the airport every 20 minutes. You can also use this service if you are arriving or departing by ferry.
