Andrew Farrington

After a career of teaching all aspects of Classics and ancient Greek and Roman history in Australian and New Zealand universities and latterly in various Greek universities, Andrew Farrington is currently Assistant Professor in Ancient Greek History in the Department of History and Ethnology of the Democritus University of Thrace, in Komotini, in north-eastern Greece. He started off with an interest in Roman architecture, which he still retains, which then morphed into an interest in the ruthless world of ancient Greek sporting life, on which he has published widely. He is particularly interested in the ‘Big Four’, that is, the Olympic, Pythian, Isthmian and Nemean games and the influence they exerted until the end of antiquity. His life in Greece has made him familiar with all corners of this fascinating country and particularly with the less well-known areas of north-eastern Greece and the southern Balkans.
