The story of Roman Canterbury, Durovernum Cantiacorum, is the story of a town that flourished for four centuries, but then collapsed as a functioning urban centre. Mass graves in its streets, in contravention of Roman law, suggest that something terrible happened to this once prosperous provincial town, possibly leading to its almost complete abandonment. Andrew was born in Folkestone, and his career has focussed firmly on Kent. He studied archaeology at Cardiff, where he completed his doctoral thesis on ‘The Anglo-Saxon cemeteries of Kent’, published in 2005.

10.00 Meet the group at Beaney Learning Lab - The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge, 18 High Street, Canterbury, CT1 2RA
10.15 Lecture by Dr Andrew Richardson - Andrew will provide an overview of the Roman town of Durovernum Cantiacorum (Canterbury) from its origins in the Late Iron Age, through to its collapse and abandonment during the fifth century AD. Particular focus will be on how this thriving urban centre came to an end, before its rebirth in the early Anglo-Saxon period.
11.00 Coffee break
11.15 Finds tray and handling session
11.45 Travel on foot to the Canterbury Roman Museum for a gallery tour with Andrew. Descending deep below the streets of modern Canterbury, we will tour the gallery of the city’s Roman Museum, where some of the many of the most important finds that have been unearthed from the period are displayed, along with an impressive in situ mosaic pavement.
13.15 Lunch
14.15 Walking tour of Canterbury to include the walls, gates and Roman theatre (part of the latter visible in the foyer of the Hilton hotel), concluding back at the Beaney.
