A Grand Tour of Roman Britain

Summary

From Conquest to Culture

Roman Britain offers a fascinating window into nearly four centuries of history, from the Claudian invasion of 43 CE to the gradual withdrawal of Roman administration in the early fifth century. The physical remnants of this cultural transformation can be found across the landscape, from Hadrian's extraordinary wall in northern England to the comfortable villa complexes of the south. This unique tour visits major sites and museums along the length and breadth of the country to explore the process of Romanization—how Celtic Britain adapted to Roman rule through military presence, urban development, and cultural exchange, while local traditions continued to flourish alongside imperial customs. Join us as we gain insights into questions of identity, community, and daily life in a province that occupied a unique position on the edge of the Roman world.
