Megaliths of England and Ireland

Megaliths of England and Ireland

Summary

Stonehenge to the Aran Islands

The presence of some of the oldest human monuments on Earth has long captured the imagination of travellers. Predating the pyramids and the ziggurats of Mesopotamia, the megaliths of England and Ireland represent some of humanity’s most enduring architectural achievements, marking a time when people abandoned their hunter/gatherer way of life in favour of permanent settlement.

Ranging from single standing stones to elaborate stone circles, chambered tombs, and massive avenues their construction required immense collective effort, sophisticated planning, a deep understanding of engineering principles and a profound connection to their landscape and the cycles of life and death. Join us on this tour as we explore some of the oldest and most mysterious examples of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments from the rolling chalk downlands of Wessex to the green valleys and fertile land of the Boyne Valley and the wild landscapes of the Atlantic Coast and Galway.
