Summary
In AD 42 the Roman Imperial court fled from Rome to Ravenna and for a period it was the political centre of what remained of the Western Empire. The result was an astonishing flowering of art and architecture created in the dying days of the Empire. To this day, the city’s numerous churches, palaces and mausolea, resplendent with shimmering mosaics expressing the majesty and mystery of God never fail to achieve the awe-inspiring impact which their patrons, designers and makers intended. From their classical Romanesque and Byzantine inspired exteriors to the intricate mosaics which adorn their walls, ceilings and domes in kaleidoscopic displays of vibrant colour and shimmering gold, these churches represent a world where faith and art converge in fabulous celebration.
