Summary
Traders to Crusaders
Beautiful Cyprus, traditionally the birthplace of the Goddess of love, Aphrodite, has attracted many unwanted suitors over the years. Wooed for her rich dowry of copper resources and sheltered and strategic coastline, she was fought over and won by Hittie warriors, seafarers from the prosperous Levant and Eastern powers from as far afield as Persia. As the great Empires emerged, they looked covetously at the natural treasures of Cyprus and sought to control her, from the Phoenicians to the British and everything in between; all took their turn as masters of the island.
With the lovely harbour of Kyrenia serving as our base we enjoy a leisurely tour of the archaeological sites of the north of the island. From the ancient port city of Soli with its impressive Roman mosaics to the medieval fortress of St. Hilarion perched dramatically on the Kyrenia mountain range. The landscape itself tells the story of successive civilizations all set against the backdrop of the Mediterranean's azure waters and the rugged beauty of the northern Cypriot coast.
