We begin on Santorini, where the volcanic eruption of Thera buried the thriving city of Akrotiri beneath metres of ash, preserving it in extraordinary detail earning it the title of the "Pompeii of the Aegean." From there we cross to Crete, the heartland of Minoan power, to explore the palaces, artefacts and landscapes that tell the story of a people whose ambition and artistry left an indelible mark on ancient Greece and, through it, on the foundations of western civilisation itself.
