Despite its small size, the country of Montenegro is filled with truly spectacular and diverse scenery, from its stunning beaches to its looming mountains, and not forgetting its ancient walled towns. Situated in Europe’s south-east, this Balkan country is a destination for every kind of holidaymaker. Here, we find a beautiful coastline, a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that will fascinate any archaeology enthusiast and many opportunities to go off the beaten track in search of adventure and outdoor pursuits.

A coastal town that will be particular interest to the historically curious is Kotor, which is also perhaps the best-preserved in the country. Ringed by Venetian walls – a feature that also gave Kotor UNESCO World Heritage status – this small town also boasts beautiful Venetian architecture, a 12th century cathedral that houses Byzantine frescoes and a lively nightlife that helps the past and present fuse seamlessly.
